Gham hai yaa Khushii hai tuu
merii zindagii hai tuu

(Are you sorrow or joy?
you are still my life)

aafatoN ke daur meN
chain kii ghaRii hai tuu

(In these troubled times
you are a moment of relief)

merii raat kaa chiraaGh
merii niiNd bhii hai tuu

(The light of my night
you are my sleep too)

maiN KhizaaN kii shaam huuN
rut bahaar kii hai tuu

(I am an autumn evening
you are like spring)

dostoN ke darmiyaan
vajh-e-dostii hai tuu

(Between friends
you are the reason for friendship)

merii saarii umr meN
aik hii kamii hai tuu

(In my entire life
you are the only paucity)

maiN to vo nahiiN rahaa
haaN! magar vohii hai tuu

(I am not the same
but yes, you are the same)

kuch to havaa bhii sard thii kuch thaa teraa Khayaal bhii
dil ko Khushii ke saath saath hotaa rahaa malaal bhii

(The air was a bit cold and then, there was your memory
my heart was happy and sad at the same time)

baat vo aadhii raat kii raat thii puure chaaNd kii
chaaNd bhii ain chait kaa, us pe teraa jamaal bhii

(That mid-night, the night of the full moon
that too the moon of the month of March, on top of that your beauty)

sab se nazar bachaa ke vo mujh ko thaa aise dekhtaa
aik dafaa to ruk ga’ii gardish-e-mah-o-saal bhii

(Stealthily, he was seeing me in such a way
that one time even the movement of month and year stopped)

us ko na paa sake the jab dil ka ajiib haal thaa
ab jo palaT ke dekhte baat thii kuch muhaal bhii

(When I could not get him then the heart was pitiful
now, in retrospective, to get him was not easy)

merii talab thaa ek shaKhs vo jo nahiiN milaa to phir
haath du’aa se yuuN giraa bhuul gayaa savaal bhii

aag daaman meN lag jaayegii, dil meN sholaa machal jaayegaa
meraa saagar na chhuunaa kabhii, saaqiyaa haath jal jaayegaa

Your lap will seethe and the heart would catch fire
Never touch my glass of wine O cupbearer [else] your hand will burn.

aik din vo zaruur aayeNge, dard kaa saayaa Tal jaayegaa
is zamane kii parvaah nahiiN, ye zamaana badal jaayegaa

One day, for sure, my beloved will come and the shadows of pain will be gone
I don’t care for my afflictions as this situation will change.

aa gayaa meraa aaNkhon meN dam, ab to jalvaa dikhaa diijiye
aap ki baat reh jaayegii, mera armaan nikal jaayegaa

I am at the verge of dying, at least now manifest yourself
Your would still be true to your words and my desire will be fulfilled.

be-sabab humse ruuTho na tum, ye laRaaii burii chiiz hai
sulah ker lo tum Khuda ke liye, ye buraa vaqt Tal jaayegaa

Do not be displeased with me, this bitterness is not a good thing
Make up with me for God’s sake and these bad times would pass.

shaah-e-mardaaN
sher-e-yazdaaN
quvvat-e-parvardigaar
laa fataa illaa Ali
laa saif illaa zulfiqaar

King of the brave,
lion of God,
[and] strength of God.
There is no one like Ali [and]
there is no sword like Zulfiqaar*.

* Zulfiqaar was the sword of Ali presented to him by Muhammad.

Ali imaam-e-manasto manam Ghulaam-e-Ali
hazaar jaan-e-giraamii fidaa-e-naam-e-Ali

Ali is the master of all, I am the slave of Ali
thousands life are to be sacrificed for Ali.

man kunto maulaa
fa haaza Aliun maulaa

To whom I am the master
Ali is the master.

Note: A famous tradition (hadith) of Prophet Muhammad. Ali was his cousin and son-in-law.

daaraa dil daaraa dil daar-e-daanii
tum tum taa naa naa naanaa, naanaa naanaa re
yaalaalii yaalaalii yaalaa, yaalaa yaalaa

Mystical chants sung by Sufis without any specific meaning.

In some versions, Nusrat has also recited the following stanza:

Ali shaah-e-mardaaN imaamun kabiiraa
ke baadasht nabii shud bashirush naziiraa

Ali is the king of the brave and the great leader
because after the Prophet there is Ali.

aaj ko’ii baat ho gayii
vo na aaye raat ho gayii

Something must have happened today
my beloved did not come and it is night now.

jab vo mere saath ho gaye
dunyaa mere saath ho gayii

When she came along with me
the entire world came along.

jab vo milne aaye raat ko
merii chaand-raat ho gayii

When she came to meet me in the night
the night became the night of new moon (the implication being the first night of the festival of Eid).

mujh se barham aap kyaa hu’e
sari qaynaat ho gayii

When you became upset with me
the whole world became upset.

ae dil-e-tabaah Gham ye hai
rusvaa unkii zaat ho gayii

O my ruined heart! the [only] pain is
that her person suffered ignominy.

mar gaye mariiz-e-shaam-e-Gham
dard se nijaat ho gayii

The sufferers of the evenings of pain have died
and relieved of their sufferings.

purnam aa gaye vo mere ghar
mutmaiin hayaat ho gayii

Misty-eyed, she came to my house
and my life became easy.
