Aadmi Aadmi Se Milta Hai

aadmii aadmii se miltaa hai
dil magar kam kisii se miltaa hai

A person meets another person
but the heart does not find everyone pleasant.

bhuul jaataa huuN maiN sitam us ke
vo kuchh is saadgii se miltaa hai

I forget his injustice [to me]
[when] he meets with such simplicity.

aaj kyaa baat hai ke phuuloN kaa
rang terii haNsii se miltaa hai

What is it today that the flowers’
color matches your laughter?

mil kar bhii jo kabhii nahiiN miltaa
TuuT kar dil usii se miltaa hai

One who is difficult to reach even after trying
[my] heart passionately loves him only.

kaar-o-baar-e-jahaaN saNvarate haiN
hosh jab be-Khudii se milataa hai

Worldly matters are resolved
when consciousness meets unconsciousness.

Lyrics: Jigar Moradabadi

Kehte Ho Mujhse Ishq Ka Afsana

raazdaaroN se bach ke chaltaa huuN
Gham-gusaaroN se bach ke chaltaa huuN
mujhko dhokaa diyaa sahaaroN ne
ab sahaaroN se bach ke chaltaa huuN

I stay clear of the confidants
I stay clear of the consolers
I have been betrayed by my supporters
now I stay clear of them.

shiiraaza-e-hayaat pariishaan ho gayaa
ye marhalaa bhii Khair se aasaan ho gayaa
mere sukuun-e-dil ko to hona hii tha tabaah
unkii bhi ek nigaah kaa nuqsaan ho gayaa

The fabric of life has been disturbed
[so] this stage has also been traversed safely.
The tranquility of my heart was bound to be ruined
but my beloved also lost one glance.

muhabbat kii ko’ii manzil nahiiN hai
muhabbat mauj hai saahil nahiiN hai
meri afsurdagii pe haNsne vaale
tere pahluu meN shaayad dil nahiiN hai

Love has no destination,
love is a wave [of the ocean] not shore
O who laugh at my sadness!
may be you don’t have a heart within.

kahte ho mujh se ishq kaa afsaana chaahiye
rusva’ii ho ga’ii, tumheN sharmaana chahiye

She asks me for a story of love
I suffer infamy and she is unabashed.

Fasle Gul Hai

fasl-e-gul hai sharaab pii leejiye
zid na keejiye janaab pii leejiye

It is the season of flowers, intoxicate yourself
don’t be so persistent, intoxicate yourself.

maikashoN mujh tak ye ghanghor ghatayeN aayiiN
tum pe rahmat hu’ii, taubaa pe balaayeN aayiiN

O imbibers! The heavy-cast clouds burst forth to me
its mercy for you, and misfortune for penitence.

pii leejiye

Intoxicate yourself.

jhuumtii Qiblaa se ghanghor ghataayeN aayiiN haiN

Swaying dark clouds have come from the direction of Mecca.

ab to pii leejiye

At least now intoxicate yourself.

sheikh jii thoRii sii pii lo aaj to
kaun dekhegaa andherii raat hai

O abstinent! Drink a little at least today
the night is dark and no one would see.

muskuraao bahaar ke din haiN
gul khilao bahaar ke din haiN
mai nahiiN to ashq-e-gham hi sahi
pii bhi jaao bahaar ke din haiN

Smile as it is spring.
Let the flowers bloom in the days of spring.
If there is no wine then drink the tears of suffering
[but] drink as these are the days of spring.

Ham Apni Sham Ko Jab

dekh kar aap kii javaanii ko aarzuu-e-sharaab hotii hai
roz taubaa ko toRtaa huuN maiN, roz niyyat Kharaab hotii hai

Seeing your youth, I pine for wine.
Everyday I repent [and] everyday my desires tempt [me].

saaqii ke gesuon kii havaa khaa rahaa huuN maiN
aur is havaa ke saath uRaa jaa rahaa huuN maiN

I am enjoying the breeze of the tresses of the cup-bearer
and I am swaying in this breeze.

ai vahshat-e-Khyaal, natiijaa tere supurd
saaGhar ko qaynaat se takRaa rahaa huuN maiN

O dreariness of thoughts, I leave the result in your hands
I am pitting the cup (of wine) against the world

jaataa huuN bazm-e-hashr meN is be-dilii ke saath
jaise kisii raqiib ke ghar jaa rahaa huuN maiN

With such spiritlessness, I go to the day of judgment
that as if I am going to one of my rivals.

dair-o-haram kii gard bahut duur rah gayii
shayad ke mai-kade ke qariib aa rahaa huuN maiN

The dust of the temple and [that of] the mosque is left far behind,
[it] seems that I am very near to the tavern.

Kali Kali Zulfon Ke Phande

husn-vaale vafaa nahiiN karte
ishq-vaale daGhaa nahiiN karte
zulm karnaa to inkii aadat hai
ye kisii kaa bhalaa nahiiN karte

[These] pretty ones are not faithful
[but] the lovers do not cheat.
Tyranny is their [of pretty ones] habit
[and] they never benefit anyone.

jo nazar aar-paar ho jaaye
vo hii dil kaa qaraar ho jaaye
apnii zulfoN kaa Daal do saayaa
tiirgii Khush-gavaar ho jaaye
terii nazroN ko dekh paaye agar
sheikh bhii mai-gusaar ho jaaye
tujhko dekhe jo ek nazar vo rang
chaaNd bhii sharm-saar ho jaaye
aaiinaa apne saamne se haTaa
ye na ho Khud se pyaar ho jaaye

The glance that pierces through
tranquilizes the heart.
Spread the shadows of your tresses
to make darkness pleasent.
If a pious person are able to see your glances
he would also become intoxicated.
If it sees you for an instant
the moon would feel ashamed.
Remove the mirror from your front
[else] you may fall in love with yourself.

phuul ho jaatii ho yuuN taish meN aayaa na karo
faasile Khatm karo, baat baRhaayaa na karo
ye nigaaheN, ye ishaare, ye adaayeN, taubaa!
in sharaaboN ko sar-e-aam luTaayaa na karo
shaam gahrii ho to kuch aur hasiiN hotii hai
saayaa-e-zulf ko chehre se haTaayaa na karo
