Ali imaam-e-manasto manam Ghulaam-e-Ali
hazaar jaan-e-giraamii fidaa-e-naam-e-Ali

Ali is the master of all, I am the slave of Ali
a thousand lives are to be sacrificed for Ali

Note: Ali was the cousin and son-in-law of Prophet Muhammad. He is especially revered by the Sufi mystics.

Haidariam qalandaram mastam
bandaa-e-Murtaza Ali hastam
peshvaa-e-tamaam virdaaram
ke sage kuu-e-sher-e-yazdaanam

Haider [Ali] is the generous monk
Ali is the chosen one [by God]
[and] the leader of the people swaying in [God’s] remembrance
I am the dog of the streets of God’s lion.

kabhii diivaar hiltii hai, kabhii dar kaaNp jaataa hai
Ali kaa naam sun kar ab bhii Khaibar kaaNp jaataa hai

Sometimes the wall shakes, sometimes trembles the door
on listening the name of Ali, the fort of Khaibar trembles even now.

Note: During the fight for the Fort of Khaibar, Ali rooted out the heavy door of the fort and used it as his shield.

shaah-e-mardaaN Ali
Ali Ali Ali
Ali Maula Ali

King of the brave
Ali
Ali, [my] master Ali.

patthar pe alam deen ka gaaRaa jisne
lalkaar kar Marhab ko pichaaRaa jisne

[One] who implanted the flag of faith on the rocks
[One] who challenged Marhab and defeated him.

Note: In the same war, Ali challenged and defeated the celebrated warrior Marhab.

[The] truth!
Ali
Ali, [my] master Ali

jap le jap le mere manvaa
yahii naam sacchaa hai pyaare
yahii naam tere sab dukh haare
isii naam kii barkat ne diye raaz-e-haqiiqat khol

O my heart! chant this
[as] this is the name that is true.
This is the name that removes suffering
[and] the auspiciousness of this name opened the secrets of being.

shaah-e-mardaaN Ali
la fataa illah Ali
sher-e-yazdaaN Ali

King of the brave, Ali.
There is no one except Ali
[and] the lion of God is Ali.

tan par Ali, Ali ho zubaaN par Al Ali
mar jauuN to kafan par bhii likhna Ali Ali

My body chants Ali, so does my tongue
[and] when I die, then write Ali on my shroud.

baGhair hubb-e-Ali mudd’aa nahiiN miltaa
ibaadatoN kaa bhii hargiz silaa nahiiN miltaa
Khudaa ke bandoN suno Ghaur se Khudaa kii qasam
jise Ali nahiiN milte use Khudaa nahiiN miltaa

Without the love of Ali, desire is not fulfilled
not even the prayers are answered.
O! slaves of God listen carefully, by God!
One who does not realizes Ali does not realize God.

basad talaash na ab kuch vus’at-e-nazar se milaa
nishaan-e-manzil-e-maqsuud raahbar se milaa
Ali mile to mile Khaana-e-Khudaa saa hameN
Khudaa ko dhuuNdha to vo bhi Ali ke ghar se milaa

Don’t search for anything now, match the eternal search
match the footprints of the desired destination with guide
to get Ali is like getting a house of God
searching for God too, we found Him in Ali’s house.

diid Haider kii ibaadat, hai ye farmaan-e-nabii
hai Ali ruuh-e-nabii, jism-e-nabii, jaan-e-nabii
gul-e-tathiir Ali
haq kii shamshiir Ali
piiroN ke piir Ali

The sight of Ali in itself is prayer, so said the Prophet
Ali is the soul, body and life of the Prophet
Ali is the purified flower
Ali is the sword of the truth
Ali is the saint of the saints.

dast-e-ilaa kyuuN na ho sher-e-Khudaa Ali
maqsuud har ataa hai shah-e-laa-fataa Ali
jis tarah ek zaat-e-Muhammad hai be-misaal
paidaa hu’aa na hogaa ko’ii duusraa Ali

Dear Friend,

You clearly are very well versed in Urdu, but in my humble opinion your transliteration and translation of the Farsi lines “Haidariam qalandaram mastam” etc. is somewhat inacurate. May I therefore suggest my own translation of these verses, which were originally composed by Hazrat Sharafuddin Bu Ali Shah Qalandar of Panipat in the 13th Century CE:

“I belong to Haydar [an Arabic epithet of Hazrat Ali meaning "Lion of God"]
I am an intoxicated ecstatic qalandar [qalandars are wandering dervishes who pay little or no heed to religious and social conventions; some of them are attached to a Tariqat, but many are not]
I am a slave of Ali the Chosen One
I am the leader of all the drunkards [peshvaa-e tamaam rindaanam - "rindaan" is the term used for those Sufis who engage in practices which induce mystical intoxication]
As I am a dog in the street of the Lion of God” ["Sher-e Yazdaan" is Persian for "Lion of God"].

In addition to the above, I also would like to include a little note on the phrase “Shaah-e Mardaan”: it does mean “the King of Men” or “the King of Brave Men”, as “mardaan” is the plural of “mard”, the Farsi word for “man”. However, in Farsi, “mardaan” has a specific connotation when used in a spiritual context; then it means “men of God” or “people devoted to God”. As such, “mardaan” may also include women, not only men. This was taught to me by my own Pir.

Salaam to all!

Tauseef Ali Hisbani November 8, 2007 at 10:58 am

Few more pointers
Haydar actually means Warrior (Imam Ali’s complete title is Haydar e Karar which means a warrior who has no match ie no human can defeat Ali)
ASADULLAH means the Lion of Allah the actual title
I am curious how comes the last portion is not translated from dast-e-ilaa and onwards.

Ali November 28, 2007 at 10:38 am

Salam Brother,

I agree with brother wazir, but the part about Peshewae Tamam rinda nam is again inaccurate and also the verse that follows it. K sagee koi sher e yazdanam.

In these two verse’s he is comparing himself.

peshvaa-e-tamaam rinda naam
ke sage kuu-e-sher-e-yazdaanam
I am higher than any great name you can imagine
Yet, I am nothing compared to the dog that lives on Lion of God’s (Ali’s) Street.

Also, Shah e Mardan, means “King of Mankind”.

Haider December 1, 2007 at 4:02 am

Excellent site ,keep up the good work.

Ali Murtaza March 24, 2008 at 4:00 am

Tauseef Ali Hisbani, Heydar means lion, Heydar E Karrar means the invincible lion..

nusafir April 13, 2008 at 4:01 am

As a non urdu or panjabi fan of the Ustad – I really apreciate this site.

would love to get translation of the last part.

dast-e-ilaa kyuuN na ho sher-e-Khudaa Ali

Adnan May 10, 2008 at 3:21 pm

I sort of dont understand the first two lines of the last part which is not translated but i understand the rest of that phrase… I’ll still try to give a whole translation

(dast-e-ilaa) (door of god?) why not be the lion of God.
maqsud har ataa hai ? king of brave is ali
Like the progeny of prophet Muhammad is one and (unmatchable, no example can be given of it)
There is none borne nor will, Like Ali
These 5 are indeed the reason of creation
Khairunnisaa (Hazarat Bibi Fatima, prophet’s daughter), Hasan (Hazrat Ali’s son through Fatima), Hussain (Hazrat Ali’s second son through Fatima), Mustafa (Prophet Muhammad), Ali

Ya ALI(A.S) Maddad
….Just want to say tht there isnt any body in this worid who can understand hazarat ALI(a.s) the persanality given by ALLAH(swt) to ALI(a.s) is only in the knowledge of our prophet MOHUMMAD(S.A.W) and ALLAH him self.when ever i listen to this track it takes me so far away from this world .trust me once from the bottom of ur heart say Ya Ali(a.s) u feel it n u will admit u never experience this thing before….i hope GOD make me his salve in this world n in the next world ..MOLA WARIS

Salams to all,
I have to say that the is also one of my favorite qawallis. I love Imam Ali A.S. very much, and to hear him praised like this, makes me even prouder. I am proud to say that I am a shia, and very strongly believe in the twelve Imams. The transalation to the qawalli only proves the importance of hazrat Ali A.S.

Ali June 26, 2008 at 10:24 pm

salam all

i just wanted to note a few things haidar is one of the lions names in arabic and karar dosent mean invinsible it means that he attacks and never flee’s which was arabs way of war in those days hence the title karar not farar meaning attacker never fleeing and the door of khaibar he didnt not use as a shield but at the time of that war the khaibar wall was invinsible and it took 40 men to open 1 door of the wall but imam ali opened it with 1 hand just to clear things and keep this site up

ali akbar July 12, 2008 at 2:57 pm

wow, mashallah brother, im crying a little and in a happy calm way, thanks alot brother.marhavah. its imam ali’s birthday today, i couldnt have asked for ne thing more or better.

Dont Search for anything now , keep your eye on the eternal search .
Your goal your ultimate aim should be eying the Guide (Ofcourse Ali (QWK))
We got Ali (QWK) from the House of Allah (Kaba) He was born in Kaba Tullah .
We searched for Allah and we got Allah from the House of Ali ( Ahle Bayt) .

Keep up the good work. Keep it alive for the next generations. For us in the western age, we need to keep our past alive.

Beautiful, thankyou for the translation, and to all the people who given their opinions on corrections.

I have on question though, just an observation rather.

” kabhii diivaar hiltii hai, kabhii dar kaaNp jaataa hai
Ali kaa naam sun kar ab bhii Khaibar kaaNp jaataa hai

Sometimes the wall shakes, sometimes trembles the door
on listening the name of Ali, the fort of Khaibar trembles even now ”

Shudnt ‘ kabhii dar kaaNp jaataa hai ‘ translate to
‘ Sometimes even FEAR itself trembles ‘

- thnx again

Mustajab Hussain September 24, 2009 at 2:47 pm

I never get tired of listening to this Qawalli performed by Nusrat Fateh Ali in 21st centruy which was written by Bu Ali Qalandar in 13 centuty. How these two centuries are linked by this Qawalli is unbeliveable. I am sure Bu Ali Qalandar had known (when he wrote the lyrics) that somebody named Nusrat Fateh (May God keep him in the heighest places in Heaven) would sing it this way. Totally supernatural stuff.

ChingLen Khuman September 25, 2009 at 9:27 am

Let us forget religion,(for a while).
This kind of lyrics, this kind of music reminded us the story of such a supreme sacrifice by someone. We must, we must remember it. I would like to thank all of you friends for the kind translation.
